On my way into Fortitude Valley for a Magazine Gig, I came to a stop on Gympie
Arterial Road just outside of Carseldine around 9 am on the 18th April, I looked up into my review mirror and saw a 4x4 coming towards the backend of me with little or no time to stop. I braced myself for impact, my left foot was hard down on the brake and I waited for the inevitable.
The driver slammed into the back of my 4x4 pushing me into the small sedan in front, I took a few deep breaths and got myself out of the vehicle to check on the driver. His head was down in the steering wheel, alive, unharmed, and shaking his head pleading "I am so sorry". My heart was racing, full of adrenaline and sheer panic, I was so concerned for everyone's safety I didn't take a minute to think of myself and I made my way to the car in front to check on the young driver, she was nervously shaken but unharmed.
At that moment, apart from everyone's safety and wellbeing, my only other priority was to make sure that my 4x4 was still roadworthy, I just wanted to get to my gig, I have never been late or missed an opportunity like this, and I didn't want to start now.
Once the tow truck drivers arrived and assessed the Vehicles, I was notified that both 4x4s were going to be a write-off and need to be towed, the young woman's sedan was fine apart from damage to her rear bumper that would be fixed by an insurer.
As a precaution due to a little bit of pain and stiffness to my neck and shoulders, my husband took me straight to the Doctors and I would soon leave with what was described as moderate whiplash and to take the necessary steps for rehabilitation to heal.
As the weeks and months went on, I knew within myself I wasn't right, Dr's would tell me
give it 6-9 months and apart from that you will have a niggle here and there worst case scenario but you will be fine.
The first couple of months I managed to take a job here and there for hair and makeup, mainly weddings because you can't leave a bride at the last minute without a makeup artist, that's just cruel! There were many jobs I had to find a new artist for, some took it well and wished me a speedy recovery, others not so much but I did what I had to do due to my ill health.
Alongside having to give my gigs away for my freelance business, my personal training and boot camps had to come to a halt as I could no longer demonstrate the exercises or even carry many of the different types of equipment I used for clients, this was one of the hardest things I had to do because it was passion, but looking forward to starting my Bachelor's degree kept me grounded and moving forward.
The next couple of months flew by super fast, between physio, osteo, exercise physiology, Drs, and Specialist appointments I had also had to make the tough decision of taking a personal injury compensation claim against the driver due to the loss of income and ongoing pain and suffering.
I knew moving forward wasn't going to be easy or without its stressors but who knew just how bad it was going to get.
